Keynote address from Dr. Paul Ho
TiTle:
Frontiers of Astrophysics at mm and submm wavelengths
Abstract:
The mm and submm wavelengths sample the energy band where the bulk of the
cool universe is radiating its energy. With the construction of sensitive
interferometers at these wavelengths, we can study many important problems
in astrophysics. The Submillimeter Array (SMA) has been in operation on top
of Mauna Kea since 2004. It now produces exciting science on a variety of
subjects, including comets, forming stars, protoplanetary disk, jets, and
galaxies at high redshifts. The rich interstellar spectrum at submm
wavelengths and the strong dust continuum emission allow us to study the
molecular environment, the powering source, and the magnetic fields in these
sources. The Atacama Large Milllimeter/submillimeter Array, now under
construction in Chile, will be even more powerful, and will reveal much of
the universe which could not be seen before.
